Hugo was born in Lucerne, Switzerland, and he studied zoology at the University of Zurich. During his PhD studies in Ernst Hafen’s laboratory, he became interested in the genetics of growth control. He has continued to use Drosophila as a model system to explore growth-regulating mechanisms. Hugo also teaches genetics, developmental biology, and scientific writing.
