Much progress has been made in systematically mapping the bacterial genetic networks of mutations conferring resistance to antibiotics. However, despite many resistance mutations often inherently impinging on core metabolic functions and involving complex genetic interactions, very little is known about the functional constraints and consequences of bacterial metabolism on the evolution of resistance and compensatory mechanisms.

The goals of my research as a postdoc in the laboratory of Prof. Uwe Sauer are twofold: (i) understand the role of microbial metabolism in mediating the early adaptive response to an antimicrobial agent and (ii) investigate the synergy between natural selection of resistance mutations and the nutrient composition of the environment.
